WhatsApp vs Apple vs Aeva: message translation for couples, compared honestly
The big messengers have added translate buttons, and most of them are free. For a lot of couples that's enough. Here's what each one actually does — and when it isn't enough.
We make Aeva, so take our view with that in mind. We've tried to stick to what each company has published, link to the source, and be clear where the free options are the better choice. Features change quickly; everything below is as of October 2026.
The short version
- If you share some language and only need help with the odd message, the translate button in the app you already use is free and probably enough.
- If every message needs translating, you want to send voice messages, or your language pair isn't covered, a translate button turns into a chore — that's the case Aeva is built for.
What each option does
- How
- Long-press a message and tap Translate. One message at a time. Available since September 23, 2025.
- Languages
- On Android at launch: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian and Arabic (no Ukrainian). On iPhone: 19+ languages via Apple's translation, including Ukrainian.
- Privacy
- WhatsApp says translations happen on your device, where WhatsApp can't see them.
- Cost
- Free.

Apple Messages — Live Translation
- How
- Turn on "Automatically Translate" for a conversation in Messages (iOS 26). You may need to download a language pack first.
- Languages
- Nine: Chinese (Mandarin, Simplified), French, German, Italian, English, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (Spain). No Russian or Ukrainian.
- Needs
- An Apple Intelligence iPhone (iPhone 15 Pro or newer). Works best when both people are on Apple's latest systems, though you can translate incoming messages from Android phones.
- Cost
- Free.

Instagram DMs
- How
- Tap a message to translate it. Added in 2025.
- Cost
- Free.
Aeva
- How
- No button. Each person writes in their own language and reads in their own language; every message is translated both ways as it arrives. Voice messages are translated and spoken in a natural voice.
- Languages
- 22, including Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, Turkish, Arabic, Hindi, Bengali, Urdu, Tagalog, Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
- Needs
- Both people install Aeva (iPhone, Android or web). Translation runs in the cloud on Google Gemini, not on your device.
- Cost
- Free credits for new accounts, enough for hundreds of messages; then credit packs, paying only for what you translate. No subscription.
Where the built-in options are the better choice
Being straightforward about this: if one of these describes you, you probably don't need Aeva.
- You mostly talk in a shared language and only occasionally want a word or sentence decoded.
- You don't want another app. Built-in translation lives where your chats already are, and it costs nothing.
- On-device translation matters to you. WhatsApp says its translations stay on your device; Aeva's translation runs in the cloud.
- Your languages are covered on both of your phones — say, English and Spanish on recent iPhones.
Where a translate button starts to get in the way
Translate buttons are designed for the occasional foreign message in an otherwise single-language chat. A relationship where you don't share a language is a different situation: every message is foreign to one of you.
- The tap adds up. Long-press, translate, read; then write in a language that isn't yours, or paste from somewhere else. Over hundreds of messages a week, it's a lot of friction in the most important chat on your phone.
- Writing is the hard half. Most translate buttons help you read. They don't help you write naturally in your own language and have it arrive in theirs.
- Tone and jokes. Teasing, irony and affection are what get lost first in a literal translation, and they're most of what a couple says to each other.
- Voice messages. Hearing each other matters. A text translate button doesn't help with a voice note.
- Language coverage. As of October 2026, Ukrainian and Russian aren't covered by Apple's Live Translation, and Ukrainian wasn't in WhatsApp's Android launch list.
That's where Aeva fits. The idea is "be yourself in your own language": you both write without thinking about translation, with your own humour, and Aeva carries over the tone rather than a word-for-word version. Voice messages come out spoken in the other person's language.
So which should you use?
Use the free button you already have
If you share a language, need help only sometimes, and your language pair is supported on both phones.
Try Aeva
If every message needs translating, you want voice messages in both languages, your pair isn't covered, or you're both tired of sounding like a phrasebook.
Nothing stops you from using both: keep your usual messenger for everything else, and use Aeva for the conversation where language gets in the way.
Write in yours. Read in yours.
Both of you install Aeva. New accounts start with free credits, enough for hundreds of messages.
Questions people ask
Does WhatsApp translate Ukrainian?
On iPhone, yes: WhatsApp uses Apple's translation, which covers 19+ languages including Ukrainian. On Android, the launch list in September 2025 was English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian and Arabic, without Ukrainian.
Does Apple's Live Translation in Messages support Russian or Ukrainian?
As of October 2026, no. It supports nine languages: Chinese (Mandarin, Simplified), French, German, Italian, English, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil) and Spanish (Spain). It also needs an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence (iPhone 15 Pro or newer).
Is built-in translation good enough for a relationship?
For many couples, yes — especially if you share some language and only need help now and then. It gets tiring when every single message needs translating, when you want voice messages in both languages, or when your language pair isn't covered.
How is Aeva different from a translate button?
In Aeva there is no button: each person writes in their own language and reads in their own language, and voice messages are translated and spoken too. It covers 22 languages. Both people need the app, and translation is paid with credits after the free starting credits.
